Eden Riley is a skeptic psychic. She knows she has a little power, but she has no control over it. She is not a big believer in what she can do, but while working with the Police to find a serial killer, she has a vision and ends up finding him. It turns out to be a horrible experience for her. The killer makes her a hostage and the cop she is working with, the handsome Ben Hanson, has to shoot him. Little did she know, but the serial killer was possessed by a demon and when he dies the demon jumps into her.
She now has a demon inside of her. She can hear him, something he had trouble with when he was inside his previous hosts. Because of her otherworldly powers the demon can also take form during the day, although he has to stay close to her to do so. His name is Darrak and he is incredibly good looking and sarcastic. He tells her that he was cursed by a black witch 300 years ago and lost his body. He needs her help to find the witch and break his curse, in exchange he will help her in her dating life, which so happens to have improved when Detective Ben asked her out.
Of course, things aren't as simple as they sound and the possession brings Eden a lot of headaches and problems, especially in the form of very insistent exorcists, free loading shifters and unexpected lust.
The premise sounds very interesting, but I wasn't captivated. I'm usually a very fast reader and once I start a book I tend to finish it in one sitting. That was not the case here. I kept stopping and finding other things to do. It wasn't that the book was bad, but I just couldn't keep my interest in it for very long. I'm actually having a hard time writing this review, because I can't seem to put my finger on what didn't really work for me, but I'll try.
There are some very funny scenes and quotes in the book, but I wasn't laughing out loud at them. I did smile more than once, but that was the strongest reaction I had while reading it. I did like Eden and Darrak, but their relationship struck me as very shallow. The book and the characters felt flat to me. The writing was weak. There were some surprising twists and turns in the plot at the end, but it just didn't do it for me. I thought the novel would be in the same line as the wonderful and hilarious
Queen Betsy series by MaryJanice Davidson, but it really didn't come close. It is a light and fluffy read, but maybe too superficial for me. It has some entertaining moments, I won't deny that. There is room for improvement and the world the author built has a lot of potential, so maybe the next one will be better.
I don't regret reading it, and I know a lot of people will enjoy what Michelle Rowen created, but I wasn't impressed. I don't know if I'll be reading the next one in the Living In Eden series, Something Wicked, that will be released in October 5th, 2010. But I'll keep an open mind about it, after all I didn't dislike the book, I just didn't love it.
